5 Hacks You Must Know Before Visiting Medellin

If you're planning a trip to Medellín, whether it's your first time or you've got a few visits under your belt, there are some things you need to know to make the most of your time in this city.

As someone who's been living here since 2021, I've put together a list of five essential tips that will ensure your trip is smooth, convenient, and unforgettable.

1. Getting from the Airport to the City

Upon arriving at José María Córdova International Airport, you'll need a reliable mode of transportation to get to the city center.

Your options include white taxis or Uber. Taxis are readily available outside the airport and offer a hassle-free ride to your destination for around 90,000 pesos.

Alternatively, Uber is a convenient option, albeit with some caveats due to its legal status in Colombia.

2. Navigating the City

Once in Medellín, getting around is a breeze with Uber.

Rides are incredibly affordable, with average fares ranging from $3 to $5 for most trips. In addition to Uber, you can also use the Uber app to request traditional taxis, which may be faster in certain areas.

For places where Uber isn't readily available, I've also used other ride-hailing apps like DD and IND Driver as backup options. While these apps may not be as popular as Uber, they can come in handy when you're in a pinch.

3. Getting Cash

While most establishments in Medellín accept card payments, it's always a good idea to have some cash on hand for street vendors and other small purchases.

The easiest way to get cash is from ATMs, but be sure to use ones located in safe, well-lit areas like shopping centers. Another option is to exchange currency at Casa de Cambio or exchange houses, where you can compare rates and get Colombian pesos for your foreign currency.

And if you're in need of cash in a hurry, you can even use ride-hailing apps like Rappi to withdraw money from ATMs and have it delivered to your doorstep.

4. Getting a Local SIM Card

Having a local SIM card is essential for staying connected during your time in Medellín.

You can easily get a prepaid SIM card from Claro or other providers at their retail stores located throughout the city. Just be sure to register your phone for use in Colombia, which can be done at select Claro shops. Once you've got your SIM card set up, you'll have access to affordable data plans and reliable coverage throughout your stay.

5. Using Rappi for Everything

One of my favorite discoveries in Medellín is the Rappi app, which is like Uber Eats on steroids.

Not only can you order food from your favorite restaurants, but you can also get groceries, alcohol, pharmacy items, and even cash delivered right to your door. With features like Rappi Turbo for speedy deliveries and the ability to withdraw cash from ATMs, Rappi truly is a game-changer for life in Medellín.
